How do account updaters work?
Marqeta queries cards for the following account update criteria:- New account: When a new PAN is issued.
-
Updated card: There are two card update criteria for account updaters:
- When a card is updated with a new PAN: this commonly occurs for lost or stolen cards, or to address fraud.
- When a card is reissued with the same PAN: this commonly occurs when a card is expired or damaged. A new card is issued with the same PAN but a new expiration date.
- Account closure: When an existing PAN is terminated.

When a card on file is reported lost or stolen, you can either reissue the card with a new PAN or close the account and create a new card. Both options are valid, with different tradeoffs as listed below:
Recommended approach:
-
Default to reissue with new PAN (reason codes
R/A) for lost cards to protect the cardholder’s legitimate billing relationships. - Monitor post-reissue card-on-file activity on cards reissued for “lost” status, specifically watching for new merchant enrollments or transaction patterns that don’t match the cardholder’s known behavior in the period immediately after reissue.
-
If a case shows a pattern consistent with fraud (for example, new, unfamiliar merchants billing the account shortly after reissue, or the cardholder disputes charges tied to the new PAN), treat it as a signal to fall back to closure (
C) then create a new account (N, if applicable) for that account going forward.
