Launching card products in a new country is a simple process with Marqeta, requiring little to no input from Marqeta. When launching in a new country, you can set up additional card products that will enable you to create new sets of cards with unique parameters. You can also customize cards with the card product tools that you previously used. Before you can launch and transact with your new cards, there are some key checks you must perform to ensure that Marqeta is prepared to accept transactions using these cards.

BIN configuration

Marqeta’s platform only allows specific BIN prefixes to be processed by Marqeta routers, which means that only the markets and prefixes you have activated will be permitted to transact. Marqeta will automatically decline on your behalf any attempted transaction that falls outside of your designated parameters. You must inform Marqeta of any new BINs or BIN prefixes that you would like to allow, so that these values can be added to the Marqeta platform. Your Marqeta representative will provide you with the specific form for requesting the enablement of a BIN or BIN prefix within the Marqeta platform. Changes such as these typically take up to five days to implement. After updating the BIN or BIN prefix configuration, Marqeta will pass transactions with the new BIN prefix to your environment and allow them to transact. You will then begin receiving webhooks for each transaction that involves a card product with the new BIN or BIN prefix.

Currencies

When Marqeta provisions your environment, it is programmed with the relevant cardholder billing currencies that you will be using. The cardholder billing currency is the currency that your cardholder will be billed in. Typically, this is the currency that matches the country of issuance. Marqeta’s system uses the billing currency passed from the network. The billing currency is also used in any JIT exchange between Marqeta and your system.
Note
Allowed currencies are configured when a cardholder is created. Only new cardholders can use newly added currencies. Existing cardholders cannot use the added currency. If allowed currencies are not preconfigured, Marqeta will decline all transactions for disallowed currencies.

Card products

With the new BIN or BIN prefix now allowed by the Marqeta platform, you can connect card issuance with transactions by setting the bin_prefix of your card product to that of the new BIN prefix (usually nine digits in length). After the BIN prefix has been authorized to transact on the Marqeta platform, you can create cards within the new card product.
